Fleas

My cats have fleas. They’re scratching like mad. All day and all night. I don’t want to put chemicals on their lovely soft fur, but apart from giving them garlic for dinner (a recommendation from my Swedish acupuncturist – gratefully received, but not entirely practical – do Swedish cats have a penchant for Mediterranean cuisine – are they perhaps bored of fish?) I don’t know of any other natural remedies.

I’ve got a few bites on my ankles, so the situation although not life-threatening needs addressing pretty damn quickly. In fact, I’m in the mood to address the little biting bastards in no uncertain fashion tout de suite.

So any suggestions for flea annihilation gratefully received.

Just mentioning garlic has inspired me to share a recipe with you, courtesy of Joanne Harris and Fran Warde:

Chilli Garlic Bread
Prep: 10 mins
Cooking: 10 mins

Serves 6

1 medium hot chilli
4 cloves of garlic, crushed, peeled and chopped
a sprig of thyme
1 tsp coarse sea salt
175g butter, soft
1 baguette

Heat the oven to 180 degrees/gas 4.
Cut the chilli lengthways, remove the seeds and dice the flesh. If you like things hot, hot, hot you can keep the seeds in.

Put the chilli, garlic, thyme leaves (stripped from the stalks) and salt in a pestle and mortar and pound until it forms a paste. Put the butter in a bowl and add the paste and mix well.

Almost-slice the bread to the bottom every 3cm and then divide the butter mixture among each incision, spreading it over the inner surfaces. Put the bread on a baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes. Eat tout de suite.

Hello B-Lish from the land of brownies for breakfast, pink cars and George Doubya! I've been on such a wonderful merry little dance in finding you, coming across some fantastic music along the way. It's such a shame that I have a distracting day job to attend to, this is far more fun!

Fleas me dear, well as one who got eaten alive by NY mozzies this year, I too am at a loss with how to deal with stealth attacks of the insect variety. However lemongrass is a big turn off for those little winged bloodsuckers and it might just work for fleas too? So can you feed your cats lemongrass tea along with all that garlic..?? (You might like to get them to gargle with Listerine post this combo...)

In the meantime, I have a stonking recipe to pass to you that will take your mind of itchy bites & cross cats, yet is dead simple to do! Do you own a Moroccan Tagine? If not I highly recommend them - though a normal pot or slow cooker will also do the job nicely.

    Lamb tagine:
1lb boneless leg of lamb - cubed
    1 cup of diced onions
    1/2 cup of orange juice
    1/2 cup of beef broth
1 tablesooon of grated lemon rind
    1 teaspoon of minced garlic
1 teaspoon of fresh minced ginger
    1 teaspoon of ground coriander
    1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
    1 cinammon stick
A handful of halved dried apricots (or can include more - to taste)
    Fresh parsley
1 teaspoon of ground black pepper
    1 tablespoon of honey
(Your pickled lemons - for optional garnish)

The beauty is that once you've cubed your meat and prepared your onion, lemon etc, it's just a case of sticking it all into the tagine and slow cooking for as long as you like, so that it percolates in all its spicey juices. Your kitchen will smell amazing, (unlike when cooking fish, which I find makes the apartment smell like an old whore's gusset!) Serve with couscous, (pref with sultanas and those pickled lemons of yours) and save some of the fresh parsley to sprinkle on top. Delish B-Lish...

Huge love to you all, where has the time gone. Can you believe I'm oooo 24 now!!! ;-)
